Witi Ihimaera’s new book Sleeps Standing blends fact and fiction about the Battle of Orakau, which took place near Te Awamutu in April 1864. The battle pitched 300 Māori men, women and children against some 1700 colonial soldiers. Sleeps Standing comprises a novella narrated by a 16-year-old Māori boy, alongside non-fiction narratives from Māori eyewitnesses, together with waiata, images and a Māori translation by Hemi Kelly.
