Bob Orr, this year’s Waikato University writer-in-residence, worked on the water for 35 years, most recently driving a pilot boat, while jotting ideas for poems in his downtime. Last year he won the Lauris Edmond Memorial Award for Poetry. Australian Phil Jarratt has spent almost all his long career in journalism writing about the sea, surfers and surfing. He now also makes documentaries about the history of surfing and his memoir, Life of Brine, was published this year.
