In this group exhibition, Tauranga Art Gallery has conceived its own future machine to explore ideas of city and community. The Future Machine will infiltrate the central city environs, highlighting some of the more surprising imagery, historical and physical spaces we have in our own backyard.

It has been 90 years since Fritz Lang released his epic science-fiction masterpiece Metropolis. Its futuristic, New York inspired skyscrapers were contrasted with depictions of the working classes who fed the machines that powered the city above. Since then, the world has become something quite different – yet some of the basic urban contrasts still hold true. In this group exhibition, Tauranga Art Gallery has conceived its own future machine to explore ideas of city and community. The Future Machine will infiltrate the central city environs, highlighting some of the more surprising imagery, historical and physical spaces we have in our own backyard. The main exhibition will be held at the gallery with works also found around the CBD.
